Amy emailed me this morning to let me know about a fundraising event she's starting. She lives in the Gulf Coast, and feels the same way many of us do, overwhelmed in the face of this terrible tragedy.
We may feel overwhelmed, but we are not helpless. Please consider donating to the American Red Cross, or to any of the other relief organizations assisting the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Instead of going out to buy a latte, donate that money. Planning on having a BBQ this weekend? Ask for donations from your guests.
If you don't have money to donate, consider volunteering at a local organization. Your local food bank may not be sending food to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, but the work they do is very important to those who live near you.
You've been watching the tv, reading the newspaper, scanning the internet. Now is your time to help. This is not a time for sitting on the sidelines and assuming other people will help. It is your turn, your opportunity to make a difference in the lives of many people who are just like you. Help give these people back their lives, their homes, their hopes for a future filled with endless possibilities for themselves and their families.
